SHALBOURNE GLIDING ACTIVITIES
What We Offer
We support and host Southampton University Gliding Club, they have their own single seat glider and additionally are trained in our two seater gliders with one of our fully qualified instructors. The people from the university are a great asset to the club and fly with us almost every time we are operational.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Why not talk to us about a special event. We can host an evening group for you and your friends and colleagues where (up to a certain number) we can fly with you and give you a taste of what its like, whether through work, a social club or a great bunch of people you know, we can make sure your evening really takes off!
WEEKEND & WEDNESDAY FLYING
We try to fly every Saturday and Sunday and one day mid-week which is usually Wednesdays, weather permitting. We don't operate in rain or snow but otherwise we will try our best to fly in other conditions. Even a low cloud base provides opportunity for students to practice launching, circuits and landings.
Our Weekly Meetups are something that our loyal and dedicated members always look forward to. It is always a good feeling to be able to share your interests with others, and this is one of the most rewarding ways to do so.
ON ENTERING THE AIRFIELD
Before entering the airfield follow the instructions displayed at the gate. This will lead you safely to where the gliders are launching.
Always keep to the edge of the field and keep a good look-out for aircraft, vehicles and cables. If in doubt call 07453 601307 and wait to be escorted to the launch point.
THE WEATHER AT THE CLUB
Airfields are generally very exposed places and if it’s windy, can feel cold even in summer. In the warmer months you should wear sun block, but bring a jacket just in case it’s windy. In winter it’s best to wear warm, windproof clothing, as well as a hat and gloves. It’s best to bring more layers than you need and leave them in the car if you get too hot.
Before you get into the glider you can shed a layer as it will be much warmer under the perspex canopy. Sunglasses are recommended all year round.
WAITING TO FLY
You may have to wait a short while until an instructor and a glider become available. You could use this time to chat to the club members about our sport and our aircraft and they will be keen to show you around one of the gliders.
